10 Little Known Things About Mount Everest

With my new curiosity coming out on Mt. Everest and the recent interest in this modern marvel I thought it would be appropriate to post some facts on it! So here you go, 10 facts you probably didn’t know about Mt. Everest.

1. There are mountain spiders!

Even really high in the sky there is no way you are getting away from spiders. These nasty looking spiders are known as Himalayan jumping spiders. They hide along crevices and nooks on the slopes of the mountain. They have been spotted as high as 6,700 meters (22,000 ft).

These two Sherpas, Apa Sherpa and Phurba Tashi, both hold the joint record for the most Everest climbs in the world. They have mustered up the energy to climb this beast of a mountain 21 times! They basically climbed the mountain every year from 1990-2011.

3. The world’s highest fight.

These three guys Ueli Steck, Simone Moro, and Jonathan Griffith found themselves fighting with some Sherpas after they were told to halt their climb and didn’t listen. They were even accused by the Sherpas for causing an avalanche that hit Sherpa down the mountain who were placing ropes. They eventually had to retreat to a base camp to avoid being stoned to death.

4. It has a 450-million-year history.

Even though the Himalayan mountains formed about 60 million years ago, Mt. Everest’s history is quite older. The sandstone and limestone at the summit were once sedimentary layers below sea level 450 million years ago.

You can actually find marine fossils and shell fossils of sea creatures that once occupied the ocean.

5. There is a dispute on how high the mountain is.

Who knows how tall Everest really is? I guess this all depends on what side of the border you are living on. China says the peak is 8,844 meters (29,016 ft), although in Nepal they say it is 8,848 meters (29,029 ft). Who really cares right? It’s tall!

6. Mt. Everest is still growing.

In a study done in 1994 researchers found that the mountain is growing about 4 millimeters (0.16 in) every year. So maybe both of them (Nepal and China) are wrong about the height.

7. Mt. Everest actually has multiple names.

The Tibetan natives call the mountain Chomolungma (also spelled “Qomolangma) for a very long time. That means “Goddess Mother of Mountains.” While the Nepalese call it Sagarmatha which means “Forehead in the Sky.” That’s why Mt. Everest is part of the Sagarmatha National Park.

8. There is typically quite a few people waiting in life to climb the mountain.

Even though it cost thousands of dollars to climb Everest there are tons of people getting in line to climb this huge mountain.

9. It’s the world’s dirtiest mountain.

We see many pictures of climbers on the mountain, but we rarely see what they leave behind. There is not only the corpses of climbers that failed but also an estimated 50 tons of waste that was left behind.

Everest is the highest point from sea level, but Mauna Kea an active volcano in Hawaii holds the world’s tallest mountain.
